Windows:
Navigating City Life

POETRY: A. L. SUTTON
PROSE: MARK HOLMAN

Prose of a bus rider interspersed with poems in the way of a Boethius Menippean Satire except Windows: Navigating City Life is written by a Vietnam veteran uncle and his Harvard grad nephew. The uncle, A. L. Sutton--a Vietnam veteran who lives in Long Beach, is poet. The nephew, Mark Holman--a Harvard grad born and raised in south central Los Angeles--is prosist.

A. L. Sutton is a Vietnam veteran who lives in Phoenix, Arizona and writes because he must. Sutton’s nephew, Mark Holman, a Harvard grad, was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. This delightful uncle (poet) and nephew (prosist) team brings us “Windows: Navigating City Life,” a modern drama unfolding in urban poetry and prose. The two authors collaborated on Windows after Holman returned from living in Italy in 1994.

Inspired by Sutton’s vivid words, the poems were woven into a story of recollections as a protagonist took a bus ride through Los Angeles. Holman coined much of the prose as he logged hundreds of miles of bus and light rail trips through metropolitan Los Angeles. Holman wrote, “I was inspired to link the poetry and prose as I remembered a Middle Ages author named Boethius, whom I studied when I was at Harvard. We studied The Consolation of Philosophy, a Menippean Satire that regularly alternated prose and verse.”

“Outstanding!, Spiritually Uplifting!!! Cast Your Care is the Bomb! Anointed!”

“Thanks for sharing of yourself and God’s wisdom.”

“I never thought of breaking down how we deal with our worries in that method. It helped me to see how my thoughts were consuming and truly hindering my JOY and by ”casting my care” away, I realized how much those negative thoughts were zapping my energy and taking me places I didn’t want to be.”

“God has really gifted you with a special anointing for seeing things and sharing with others for clarity and understanding.”

“I really enjoyed the examples of personal experiences you gave... I got a clearer understanding of the scriptures 1 Peter 5:7 and Psalm 55:22.”
